The Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon emerges as the first Ugandan Marathon to be certified by the World Athletics Federation.

A popular event held annually in Uganda, the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon takes place in Kasese, Western Uganda.

Taking place in the Rwenzori Mountains also known as “The Mountains of the Moon”, the marathon attracts runners from all around the world. It is not only about racing but rather a journey showcasing the region’s beauty. The runners not only focus on finishing the race but also involve themselves in cultural and heritage of the communities along the routes of the Rwenzori region.

Recently on the 2nd April 2024, the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon was recognized and certified by the World Athletics Federation. This made the marathon the first Ugandan marathon to be certified by the organisation. The marathon has got three routes which are now certified and recognized by the World Athletics Federation and will soon are up on their website.

Being certified by the World Athletics Federation, participating in this marathon may make one’s dream come true by qualifying for the Olympics.

The Rwenzori marathon does not only focus on finishing the race but also looks towards boosting the tourism sector of the country. Through this event, the runners navigate through the steep slopes, rocky terrains, dense forests and alpine meadows not forgetting the beautiful waterfalls. With this showcasing, the marathon reminds the participants about the importance of conservation and natural beauty.

The Marathon focuses on the healthy living of the people. It sets the people both mentally and physically as they dig up their way through the beautiful nature of the Rwenzori mountains. It also aims at increasing the Ugandans’ healthy lifestyle. It challenges participants to push beyond their limits and embrace the unknown strength within themselves and fellow runners.

The marathon also looks forward to the advancement of the local communities. The participants get an opportunity to engage with the local people. They get to learn more about the culture of the community people. The marathon looks forward to creating employment opportunities to the people in the community and also improving the infrastructure of the region.

The Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon will this year be happening on the 24th August from Kasese. It does not only require one to be a professional athlete but also one who has passion and enthusiasm towards it.  The participate in the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon, one is expected to pay entry fees and will be registered online for the race.

The distances to be covered are 41km, 21km and 5km. The limit of completing the full marathon will be 6 hours. First aid will be provided in case of any issues encountered by the runners.

The Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon is aiming to attract 3,000 foreign and Ugandan runners to Kasese.
