The Rwenzori Mountains Present a New Challenge to Ugandan Athletes

By Namugula Jane

Ugandans have shown immense interest in participating in the various marathons and runs that have been organized within Kampala. But there has been a burning desire among athletes and ordinary running enthusiasts to have a marathon in an entirely different environment. The Rwenzori Mountains present a new challenge.

The Mt. Rwenzori Tusker Lite Marathon is centered around the Rwenzori Mountain ranges, and the first edition is set to take place this September and seeks to draw world attention to the iconic ranges. The full schedule will consist of a 42km full marathon, a 21km half marathon, and a 5km fun run. Ordinary people are encouraged to take part in the 5km run and explore the scenic beauty that Kasese has to offer while at it.

“I climbed the Rwenzori Mountains recently and the beauty is indescribable. It is out of this world. The marathon will help draw world attention to this resource and increase the tourism numbers,” said Equator Hikes Director, Amos Wekesa.

During a press conference, Emmy Hashakima, the Uganda Breweries Ltd. Marketing and Innovations Director, said, “I’d like to give assurances that this will not be a one-off. Tusker Lite has made a long-time commitment to ensure the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon grows into one of the biggest events of its nature on the continent and even the world.”

The marathon has been organized by Equator Hikes in partnership with online retailer Jumia to sell marathon participation tickets, and these will be going for Shs50,000. Registration has since been open in the Jumia shop.

The run has been inspired by the success story of the Kilimanjaro Run in Tanzania and is expected to attract runners from all corners of the world, with about 2000 running enthusiasts and professional athletes expected to trail blaze the running tracks at the foot of the Rwenzori ranges.

“This marathon aims to foster a healthy lifestyle amongst Ugandans, celebrate and promote sports tourism as well as highlight climate preservation.
