Inside Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania joint bid to host AFCON

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), the ruling football body of the continent will September name the winning bid for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, along with the new venue for the 2025 tournament. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have launched a joint bid for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which would bring the continental pride and joy to East Africa for the first time in half a century.

The African Football Confederation (CAF) last week acknowledged having received a declaration of interest from the three countries along with bids from Algeria, Botswana and Egypt.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni together with the First Lady ,who also doubles as Sports Minister Janet Kataha Museveni, launched Uganda’s joint bid to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament at State House, Entebbe the same week. 

The Kenyan government in December approved a cabinet proposal to back a bid for the biennial tournament, alongside two of its neighbours, Tanzania and Uganda. 

Kenya’s decision to back the joint bid is informed by the hope that a successful bid would help the national football team, Harambee Stars, achieve their target of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 2030. “Our joint bid with Uganda and Tanzania for the AFCON 2027 is a strong one. It is about time the Africa Cup of Nations comes to East Africa,” Namwamba is quoted by media.

Poor stadium infrastructure has been a problem for most East African nations, with national teams often forced to play continental matches away from home.

Kenya has twice won the rights to stage continental tournament finals, the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996 and the African Nations Championships (CHAN) in 2018, but both times was stripped of hosting rights due to the lack of internationally approved stadiums.

Uganda Cranes will host its next African Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying match against Algeria in Cameroon. The decision to host the game scheduled for June 2023 in Cameroon came after Fufa inspected the Mandela National Stadium and confirmed that it is not yet ready to host the qualifiers. 

The stadium is undergoing major renovations. This is the second time this year that Uganda is hosting its home games away from home. The first was their first leg against Tanzania, which was hosted at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Egypt.
