In a remarkable feat of determination, Sudhir Ruparelia, Chairman of the Ruparelia Group of Companies, has defied skeptics and completed the Speke Resort Convention Centre in Munyonyo, Kampala, within an astonishing one-year timeframe. The G77+China summit is also slated to unfold at the same venue from January 21 to 23, drawing the participation of leaders and representatives from 135 countries worldwide.

The facility’s role in hosting both the NAM and G77+China summits underscores its significance as a venue for high-profile international events.

Government-backed collaboration yields success

Constructed through a collaborative effort between the Ruparelia Group and the Government of Uganda, the multi-million-dollar Convention Centre has become a symbol of excellence and efficiency. The groundbreaking ceremony in January 2022 marked the beginning of a venture that successfully disproved initial doubts and completed the project on schedule.

During her visit to inspect the facilities, Janet Museveni expressed appreciation for the Ruparelia Group’s meticulous work and emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards in facility management. She called for continuous checks on all amenities to ensure they remain in excellent working condition, not only during the ongoing summits but also in the future.

Parliament’s concerns and collaboration challenges

However, the collaboration between the Government and Sudhir faced challenges, with recent revelations about the lack of financial statements for Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort, a project approved by Parliament. The strained relations between the parties further escalated when MPs were last year  denied access to inspect the construction site, leading to calls for transparency and accountability.

Sudhir’s commitment to completing the Convention Centre has received praise from various quarters, including Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze and the Uganda Development Corporation. The completion of this state-of-the-art facility, adorned with sparkling floors and glistening chandeliers, has positioned Uganda to host prestigious international summits, showcasing both diplomatic prowess and economic potential.
