Delegates highlight plight of women in French colonies at NAM conference in Baku

With just weeks left before the focus shifts to Uganda with the Non Aligned Movement Summit slated for January in Kampala, delegates from across continents on November 21 convened for the International Conference on “Decolonization: Empowerment and Development of Women,” in Baku, Azerbaijan. The conference was hosted by the Baku Initiative Group under the chairmanship of the Republic of Azerbaijan, whose President is the current chairman of the NAM.

Representatives from 18 countries spanning diverse corners of the globe, including France, the USA, Turkey, Russia, Algeria, Senegal, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Comoros, India, and French territories such as New Caledonia, Martinique, French Polynesia, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, and Corsica, were represented.

According to a communication from the organisers, the common objective of the delegates is  shine a light on the plight of women in territories still held under the grip of colonial rule, an unsettling remnant of archaic colonialism policies persisting stubbornly into the 21st century.

The conference aimed to thrust into the global spotlight the inhumane treatment and blatant violation of fundamental rights faced by women in these colonies. Delegates also advocated for heightened female participation in the fight against colonialism, fostering a collective strength to dismantle these oppressive systems.

Among the nations called into question, France stands at the forefront, perpetuating a disturbing legacy of colonialism across 13 overseas territories. Despite international resolutions and longstanding calls for freedom and independence, Paris remains entrenched in its neocolonialist approach.

France’s influence extends beyond these territories, permeating regions across Africa, South East Asia, the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and Latin America. Its policies continue to exploit resources, manipulate political dynamics, and harbor military bases, thwarting the genuine independence and development of these lands. The actions of the French armed forces have led to heinous crimes against humanity, with countless innocent lives falling victim to genocide rooted in ethnic and religious affiliations.

Representatives of the Overseas Territories, long deprived of a platform to voice their yearning for freedom and autonomy, find respite in the platform provided by the Baku Initiative Group. The platform offered delegates an opportunity to assert their inherent rights and share their struggles, breaking the silence and reaching out to the global community.

The conference also marked the fourth installment of the Baku Initiative Group’s relentless efforts against colonialism, building upon previous conferences held in Baku and the UN Headquarters in New York.
