Uganda’s national cricket team, the Cricket Cranes, has achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for the ICC T20 World Cup, set to take place in the West Indies and USA. This accomplishment is a testament to the team’s unwavering dedication, hard work, and perseverance, marking a significant moment in Uganda’s sporting history.
From their early beginnings to international acclaim, the Cricket Cranes have demonstrated remarkable consistency and determination. The team has showcased its prowess by playing 80 T20 matches and securing victory in 30 of them.
The Cricket Cranes’ journey began in 1914 with their first international match against the East Africa Protectorate. Over the years, the development of cricket in Uganda saw the formation of the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA), which has been pivotal in organizing and promoting the sport. Their debut in an ICC tournament came in 2001 at the ICC Trophy in Canada, where they demonstrated potential and commitment.
Participation in six editions of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier honed their skills and provided invaluable experience. Although they narrowly missed promotion to Division Two in the 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Three, this setback only fueled their determination to excel. Recently, they defended their ACA Africa T20 Cup title, triumphing over Kenya with a 91-run victory at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, South Africa, highlighted by Robinson Obuya’s first T20 international half-century and Henry Ssenyondo’s recognition as Man of the Match and Best Bowler of the Tournament.
The 2023 Africa Qualifier marked a turning point for the Cricket Cranes, as their second-place finish secured them a spot in the ICC T20 World Cup. Captain Brian Masaba credited this achievement to the team’s unity and dedication, underscoring the importance of strategic planning and teamwork.
“We are not going to the World Cup just to participate; we want to cause upsets and make a statement. We have a good team, and we believe in our abilities,” said Masaba.
Despite facing challenges such as limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and competition from more established teams, the Cricket Cranes have persevered. Their passion for the game, coupled with support from the UCA and the government, has been instrumental in their success. Under the guidance of new coach Abhay Sharma, the team has focused on mental preparation and adaptability, recently participating in a series of T20 matches in Sri Lanka as part of their preparation for the World Cup.
Coach Sharma echoed the captain’s sentiments, emphasizing the team’s focus on mental preparation and adaptability. “We’ve worked on developing a strong team culture and strategy to tackle different situations. We’re excited to face the best teams in the world and prove ourselves.”
In a significant morale boost, the Cricket Cranes were officially flagged off for the ICC T20 World Cup at a ceremony in Kampala. The event, attended by prominent figures including the Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, highlighted the government’s support and the nation’s collective hope for the team’s success.
As they gear up to face formidable opponents such as Afghanistan, the West Indies, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea, the Cricket Cranes remain optimistic. Drawing inspiration from their recent successes, the team is driven by a strong spirit and a never-give-up attitude, ready to make Uganda proud on the global stage.
“We know we are the underdogs, but that’s what motivates us. We want to prove ourselves and show that we belong at this level,” added Captain Masaba.
