Uganda’s potential revealed as country hosts 2024 NAM summit: A global affair

January 15, 2024, Kampala – All eyes are on Uganda’s capital Kampala as delegates converge at the Speke Convention Centre for the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit starting January 15 to 20, 2024. NAM chairman President Yoweri Museveni has expressed confidence in the country’s readiness to welcome leaders from around the world.

The NAM Summit, founded in 1961 during the Cold War, convenes leaders from 120 member countries, including representatives from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe. Uganda, set to chair the Global South Association, emphasizes the theme “Leaving no one behind” and will lead discussions on pressing global issues, fostering cooperation among nations.

Lucy Nakyobe, the chairperson of the organising committee has assured the international community of Uganda’s security despite recent travel advisories, emphasizing ongoing infrastructure improvements.

The country’s international airport at Entebbe has undergone extensive readjustments, including the expansion of the main terminal building and a VVIP parking area. Meanwhile the capital city Kampala city has undergone a facelift, with road repairs, maintenance, and street lighting.

Uganda’s selection as the host for the NAM Summit reflects its neutrality on international issues, notably abstaining from the vote on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Additionally, Uganda will host the G77 + China conference from January 20 to 23, 2024, showcasing the country’s global influence.

The South Summit, themed “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” underscores Africa’s growing impact on the international stage. The summit aims to foster discussions on shared interests at a time when emerging power centers challenge traditional global blocs. Observers look at the Kampala summit themed as a reflection of Africa’s growing influence on the international scene, and the summit will foster discussion and debate on shared interests.

The NAM and subsequently, the G-77 come days after the country hosted the 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) from 3rd- 6th January, 2024.

Thirty-three Speakers and Presiding Officers from more than 25 Commonwealth Parliaments were hosted by the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Rt Hon. Anita Annet Among and the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa. According to Among, the conference was a testament to a commitment to the continuity and prosperity of the Commonwealth.

President Museveni opened the conference focused on the topics of the environment and climate change, diverse and inclusive Parliaments, security for Parliaments and the role of Speakers and Presiding Officers. The conference was an opportunity to share best practice on Parliamentarians as effective legislators and representatives.

President Museveni engaged with parliamentary speakers from Sri Lanka, Ghana, Burundi, and South Sudan, highlighting Uganda’s potential for investment and cooperation. He emphasized the need to prioritize interests over identity politics and commended Uganda’s rejection of identity-based divisions since 1965.

As Uganda gears up to host these historic summits, all eyes are on Kampala, as we expect a pivotal moment for the Global South and further solidifying of Uganda’s stature on the international arena.
